A major historic preservation success was celebrated on Monday October 26 by the

Friends of Harmony Hall-Jacob Sloat, at a ribbon cutting to celebrate the restoration of the front porch of Harmony Hall! Fifty one attendees enjoyed a beautiful fall day to celebrate a restoration success story 20 years in the making. Honored guests included: Sloatsburg Mayor Darrell Frasier, Trustees Marc Bitterman and Susie McDonagh. Supervisor, Michael Specht, of The Town of Ramapo, extolled the accomplishments of the FOHH over their two decades of all-volunteer work. The Supervisor noted the dramatic improvement to the exterior of Harmony Hall after the recent painting of original clapboard and looked forward to ongoing restoration success for Harmony Hall which was listed to the state and national register of historic places, 2006.

Peter Bush a founding member of the FOHH and descendant of Jacob Sloat, the builder of Harmony Hall, was the keynote speaker. Mr. Bush noted that 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of The Friends of Harmony Hall-Jacob Sloat House and that 178 years ago this fall, Jacob and his family moved into the house situated on a prominent knoll in the town center of Sloatsburg. “The magnificent restored front porch is now a vital part of our community. As we cut this ribbon let us continue to make Harmony Hall a place where restoration will move forward, memorable events will be produced, memories will be made and our shared history will be celebrated now and for future generations in our historic corridor”.

Guests enjoyed a reception in the dining room of Harmony Hall featuring a cake with a restored image of Harmony Hall. An exhibit in the parlor displayed images of the history of Harmony Hall including conditions of the site at the start of advocacy to save the house in 2003-2004.

The Friends of Harmony Hall now look forward to our next event on Sunday, December 6 1-5PM for our annual Victorian Holiday open house. Live music all day by The Hudson Valley Brass & Wind Ensemble and a 2PM visit from Santa make for a festive day at the 1848 mansion of Jacob and Sarah Sloat.
