The Friends of Harmony Hall–Jacob Sloat House are pleased to present An Artist Sees the Cotton Club, a special art presentation exploring a remarkable series of paintings by the late artist Paul Tappenden (March 23, 1947 – October 4, 2021).
This program offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience the legendary Cotton Club from an artist’s unique vantage point, where creativity, movement, and history came together during the development of a major motion picture.
About the Artist
An award-winning artist whose career spanned more than 45 years, Paul Tappenden lived in Rockland County and worked across an extraordinary range of creative disciplines. His work included Broadway set design, television and film production, large-scale murals, and evocative Hudson River landscapes. He also developed two innovative painting techniques—Fresco Découvrir and Modellier Massé—which bridged the gap between traditional fresco and contemporary painting. Tappenden received honors from government and arts organizations alike, recognizing him as a dedicated champion of the arts.
Join Us for the Presentation
Join us as Dr. Chuck Stead shares how Paul Tappenden was inspired to create The Cotton Club series and explores the artistic, historical, and cultural influences behind the work. The presentation will feature PowerPoint images of the four paintings, allowing audiences to engage closely with the artwork and the story behind it.
Joining Dr. Stead as a special guest is Kathy Tappenden, Paul Tappenden’s widow.
Why This Program Matters
An Artist Sees the Cotton Club is more than an art presentation—it is a thoughtful exploration of creativity, collaboration, and cultural memory. By blending visual art with historical context and personal insight, this program honors the legacy of an artist while illuminating a significant chapter in American cultural history.
