Enjoy a perfect evening for ushering in the dark and haunted season. Soprano Carolynn Whitford presents an enlightening recital with the talents of tenor Aaron Estes, pianist Thomas Hoetzl, and an educational oration by Kandi Rosenbaum. Each art song reflects on many aspects of mystery, with twists that tie together a reimagined dramatic scene script of the powerful and evocative piece “The Seal Man” (1905), written by Poet Laureate John Masefield. Included in this new dramatic scene is composer Rebecca Clarke’s famous art song “The Seal Man” (1922), which draws from Masefield's narrative poem in a beautiful piece that explores otherworldly love, enchantment, and the irresistible pull of the sea. This program is historic in many ways, as nowhere have Masefield’s narrative poem AND Clarke’s art song been blended for such a performance. Enjoy a seafaring evening of art songs composed by the masters of music, with poetic prose by the scholars of their time. A delightful reception follows the presentation.
