RESCHEDUELD Salon Event due to inclement weather: Mr. Marshall Comes to Hillburn

Updated: Feb 27, 2023

Join us on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, 7PM - Mr. Travis W. Jackson will present an illustrated recount of a historic decision in New York's civil rights and education history that took place in Hillburn, New York. Jim Crow laws forced African American and Native American children to attend The Brook School, a rundown dilapidated wooden structure without indoor plumbing, a library, or a gymnasium. White children attended the new Main School, well-equipped with indoor plumbing, a library, and a gym. His father Dr. Travis E. Jackson was nine years old in 1943 when 49 Hillburn families of color launched a boycott of the segregated school. They employed the help of the NAACP to fight for integration. The NAACP hired Civil Rights attorney Thurgood Marshall who won the case 11 years before his landmark Supreme Court case - Brown vs The Board of Education. Mr. Jackson will answer questions after his presentation and refreshments will be served. Seating is limited. Please RSVP to events@friendsofharmonyhall.org to reserve your seat.
