Rev 250 Exhibit at Harmony Hall: The Seven Taverns Which Saved The Ramapo Pass

By Peter Bush

The seemingly simple phrase “George Washington Slept Here” carries a surprising

amount of cultural weight and cynicism. In the case of Sloatsburg, N.Y., Washington did in fact sleep here! Jacob Sloat descendant, Peter Bush, has produced a Rev 250 exhibit at Harmony Hall: The Seven Taverns Which Saved The Ramapo Pass.

The Seven Taverns exhibit presents the story of the taverns along the historic Clove Road in the Ramapo Pass, which ran from Suffern to Highland Mills. The Sloatsburg corridor is fortunate to have the only two surviving 18th century Taverns: Sidman’s in the Clove and Sloat’s Tavern. In addition to being important places for rest, food and lodging, the Taverns of the Ramapo Pass were critical for the exchange of news and information related to the presence of the British naval and military.

Washington appreciated the importance of the Pass and stationed militia from Orange and Ulster counties throughout the war. Communication between all of the colonies was made possible with the Pass in the hands of American troops. Records of George Washington presence in the area show that on July 15, 1777 he marched to the entrance of the Clove. Two years later on June 6, 1779, he went from Ringwood Iron Works to Sloat’s Tavern where he spent the night. The Stephen Sloat home became headquarters for American troops stationed in the Ramapo Pass.

The Friends of Harmony Hall look forward to presenting the history of the Seven Taverns to guests and school groups over 2026 at the 19th century home of Jacob Sloat which in recent years has realized significant restoration progress!

Admission is by appointment: 845 712 5220.
