About The Event
The monarch butterflies are vulnerable! In September 2023, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reversed its decision to keep the monarch on the endangered species list. Instead, IUCN placed them on the vulnerable list due to a lesser decline in population over the past few years. How can we help keep this trend going forward? We need to provide food for the monarch caterpillars.
On November 10, from 1:30pm - 3 pm, Harmony Hall – Jacob Sloat House, 15 Liberty Rock Road, Sloatsburg, New York, will provide an opportunity for students in grades 3-5 to plant a milkweed garden. Monarchs lay their eggs underneath the milkweed’s leaves and the newly hatched caterpillars voraciously eat the leaves to survive. Due to depletion of milkweed caused pesticides and development, migrating monarchs are finding it harder and harder to reproduce healthy future generations. We can help them to stay off the endangered species list by planting milkweed.
There will be a short presentation on the butterfly lifecycle and the path of monarch migration. Then they will plant milkweed seeds, and create a take home project. Each child will take home a trowel, garden gloves and seeds to plant at home. Students should come dressed to garden including appropriate footwear and bring a snack and drink/water bottle. Registration limited to 24 participants grades 3-5. The fee is $15 register at www.fohh.org . Email events@friendsofharmonyhall.org for more information.
