We're celebrating New York Heritage Weekend early with a full WEEK of "historic" fun!
At the whim of Sloatsburg Historian and recent FOHH President Harrison O. Bush, plans have emerged that will extend New York Heritage Weekend into a week-long affair. Harrison's vision and plans began when he learned that the Sloatsburg United Methodist Church would be celebrating the 175th anniversary of the Methodist chapel that was built by Jacob Sloat to meet the needs of a growing community of mill workers. Jacob, himself, continued to worship in the Dutch Reformed Church that still thrives along Island Road in Mahwah, NJ. Jacob's son, Henry Ransom Sloat, was later part of an enterprising group of local leaders who established Christ Church of Ramapo in Suffern in 1861.
Ramapo History Week, as Harrison named it, was originally intended to commence with a celebration of the Methodist Church anniversary on May 13th and to end on NY Heritage Weekend with a full-day's event at Harmony Hall. When the Methodist bishop was not able to attend a May 13th celebration, Harrison courageously moved forward with the plan anyway, pulling FOHH, the Town of Ramapo, Sloatsburg Historical Society and the Sloatsburg Public Library into his plot as partners. FOHH, the Town of Ramapo & the Sloatsburg Historical Society plan a day of family fun as we join in the festivities of Ramapo History Week on Saturday, May 19th at Harmony Hall
The Friends and the SHS have teamed up to present a unique day of family fun and learning as Harmony Hall hosts the final day of Ramapo History Week activities on May 19th from 10am-3pm. The morning begins with an opportunity to participate in a history scavenger hunt, where individuals and families will be challenged to answer a series of interesting questions as they wander through historic Sloatsburg in search of clues. They will arrive back at Harmony Hall, with answers in hand of course, to enjoy a day of old-fashion lawn games, house tours and a series of lectures that will make you excited to be in the heart of the historic Ramapo Pass. All activities are free, so all you need to bring is your curiosity and a spirit of fun.
